Georgi Kandev’s resignation sparked rumours of political pressure after he claimed that he resigned because “it’s impossible to chose between his post and his principles”. Below is the full text of the post with which he announced his resignation:
Georgi Kandev was appointed a temporary secretary general in February 2026 and gained national popularity with his fight against vote buying during the recent elections in Bulgaria. He was confiemd to remain on his post by the new prime minister of the country – Rumen Radev, who won a majority in the parliament with his party Progressive Bulgaria.
The minister of the interior, Ivan Demerdzhiev, commented of Kandev’s resignation, saying that it was not “worthy” to quit his post with a Facebook announcement. Demerdzhiev said that no pressure has ever been applied to Kandev and whished him good fortune in his future endeavours, “including in his future political career”.
The director of the Metropolitan Directorate of Internal Affairs (SDVR) Lyubomir Nikolov has been appointed temporary secretary general.
